In Data Science and machine learning, we encounter large data sets which need to be processed and analyzed efficiently. For this, matrix and tensor factorizations are an important tool: They serve for dimensionality and noise reduction, but also for the extraction of important features. In order to compute the corresponding models, complex and often high-dimensional optimization problems need to be solved. These problems require methods on smooth (matrix) manifolds, possibly with (nonsmooth) constraints. The research group Optimization on smooth manifolds is at the intersection of modeling and optimization. Important applications are in biomedicine and quantum chemistry, but also in signal processing.
